Even if you’re sure you’re not over tightening, which you might not know because the effects aren’t immediately visible, every DIY adjustment to your instrument is risking damage. ![]() Taking the chin rest on and off isn’t really a thing people do on a regular basis, and it shouldn’t be positioned as close to the edge as possible. The other consideration is that, if you are someone who sweats a lot or has more acidic sweat, you can risk removing the varnish from your instrument faster or otherwise wearing it down more quickly than would have been the case. (As a side note, you probably also are hearing differences because your jawbone is now in more direct contact with the violin, and the vibrations are adding additional feedback to your myringa and cochlea.) But this is usually a tradeoff most experienced violinists are happy to accept. It’s not surprising that removing the weight from the violin would impact the sound and mitigate some of the inherent dampening effect adding material to the table of a violin would cause. The higher the terms are in the list, the more likely that they're relevant to the word or phrase that you searched for.
